Roaring Fork, Sevier County

"Just as water is a basic element of life and a sacred symbol in all religions and faiths, rivers are a basic life force in our cultural, economic and ecologic history. Necessary, timeless, worth of reverence and respect, indeed sacred."

- Bob Allen, Tennessee's Scenic River Administrator
State Parks Planning Staff

Tennessee's Special Rivers

Some rivers in Tennessee benefit from being included in the State Scenic River System or the National Wild and Scenic River System. These programs are designed to respond to citizens’ interests in helping to preserve the rivers important to our heritage. Citizens can ask the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to have rivers listed as Natural River Areas, Pastoral River Areas, Developed River Areas or Wild and Scenic Rivers. To find out more information about these programs, please contact the State Scenic Rivers Administrator at the Department of Environment and Conservation.
