Hiwassee River, Polk County

"The common thread that weaves our lives together in a community is our dependence on clean water. That dependence makes necessary our individual accountability toward its preservation and protection. Experience shows, time and time again, that one person can make a difference and that we each have a responsibility to protect our wealth of water resources in Tennessee."

- Daniel Boone, President
Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association

Acknowledgements

The success of this project is due in large part to the support and guidance provided by the Steering Committee. Through annual meetings and private conversations, the Assessment grew from the assorted expertises represented on the Committee. A list of the Steering Committee members is found on the inside cover. A special thanks is extended to Mr. Reginald Reeves, Director, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Natural Heritage, for sharing his vision about this project.

This project could not have been conducted without the initial seed money provided by the Lyndhurst Foundation and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Special thanks go to Mr. Bruz Clark and Mr. Jack Murrah of the Lyndhurst Foundation and to Dr. Ralph Brooks, Dr. Wayne Poppe, Mr. Chris Ungate and Mr. Ron Pasch of TVA. Additional funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Nashville District and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has also been important in the continued success of our partnerships. Finally, deep appreciation is expressed to the organizations and individuals who spent the time to get this project started: Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning (Ms. Jenny Freeman), Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association (Mr. Bill Kelsey, Mr. Bill Allen) and the State of Tennessee (Mr. Mike Countess, Mr. Bob Allen, Mr. Ben Smith, Ms. Elizabeth Bunting). Additionally, appreciation is extended to Mr. Joel Zimmerman and Mr. Larry Whitson for their work on the Assessment.

A project this size would not be possible without the talents of many individuals. We are particularly grateful for the help provided by Mr. Cliff Whitehead, Ms. Gina Murphy-Boyd and Mr. Richard Kirk at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency in setting up the GIS data sets and in serving as partners throughout this entire project.

The help of the National Park Service, Rivers and Trails Conservation Assistance Program, was also invaluable in completing this project. Special thanks are extended to Mr. Bill Lane and Mr. Wallace Brittain for their continued technical support.
