What is the Green Schools Program?

The Green Schools Program is the schools’ branch of the Tennessee Pollution Prevention Partnership (TP3). * Members can be public or private K-12 schools, colleges, universities, technology, or special education schools. Green Schools involve students in campus and community projects that reduce waste, conserve energy and water, decrease hazardous chemicals, improve air quality, and create wildlife habitat. By publicizing successful projects, Green Schools raise environmental awareness among students, staff, parents, and the local community.

What are the benefits?

• Environmental Education will expand at your school as you take advantage of EE Resources

• Your Success Stories will inspire other schools across Tennessee to make environmental improvements on their campuses and in their communities

• Environmental management will improve your school’s ecological footprint, while saving or earning money at the same time

• The TP3 network can provide ideas and assistance with Green School projects

• Successful projects can make your school eligible for the Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards and other award programs

  • Your school can proudly fly a TP3 green flag at the Performer level

How do you become a TP3 Green School?
Any staff person with environmental interests can sign up their school, using our on-line sign-up form. A single classroom or after-school club may sign up initially. Like all participants in TP3, members will work upward through levels of commitment to pollution prevention. The whole school will likely be involved at the Performer level. Visit our Walk-thru for a detailed explanation of how a school progresses through the levels of TP3. Click here for a complete overview for K-12 schools.

The Tennessee Solid Waste Education Project ( TNSWEP) and Project CENTS (Conservation Education Now for Tennessee Students) are funded by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. These programs provide environmental education resources and assistance to teachers. Another program that improves the school environment is the School Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) and the Mercury Thermometer Swap.

*Green Schools is part of the Tennessee Pollution Prevention Partnership (TP3), an initiative of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Division of Community Assistance. TP3 is a statewide network of households, schools, government agencies, organizations, businesses, and industries, working together to protect our shared environment through pollution prevention. Our schools can help our children become stewards of the Earth by increasing their awareness of environmental problems and solutions.
