Current list of training courses in southern United States

The Office of Environmental Assistance's radon program works with the Southern Regional Radon Training Center (SRRTC) to ensure courses are offered in Tennessee to aid those who want to become radon testers and mitigators in Tennessee. A variety of other professionally certified courses are also offered to assist:

  • Home builders
  • Architects
  • Codes officials
  • Home inspectors
  • Others with an interest in the impact of radon on their clients

Inspecting the Radon Mitigation System During the Home Inspection

This seminar expands the professional knowledge of the home inspector on radon while providing their business with another revenue opportunity during the home inspection. Each seminar covers the EPA Radon Mitigation Standards and provides an inspection checklist for inspectors to use during the home inspection. Completion of this seminar provides the inspector with information required to inspect radon mitigation systems and determine compliance with the provisions of EPA's Radon Mitigation Standards that are verifiable in the context of a home inspection.

Each seminar has been approved for continuing education credits with the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) for eight hours of credit. The National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) has also approved the seminar for certified radon measurement and mitigation specialists to receive continuing education credits.

Radon and the Tennessee Real Estate Professional

These seminars are designed to provide an overview of radon issues in general and allow basic understanding of radon, and radon health effects relevant to professional activities. Training, along with classroom discussions will provide information on topics such as:

  • Radon health effects
  • Sources of radon
  • Radon entry and behavior
  • Radon measurement
  • State and federal regulations
  • Radon mitigation systems
  • Reduction of liability
  • Effective client communication

  • Insurance professionals

The Tennessee Real Estate Commission has approved this seminar for three hours of continuing education credit. Participant certificates and continuing education units will be provided for each participant completing the course.

AIA CEU Approved Radon Resistant New Construction Seminar

This is a four hour seminar focusing on using radon resistant construction techniques during building design and construction. The seminar covers:

  • What is radon and why is it a problem
  • Radon sources in Tennessee
  • Components of radon resistant construction techniques

Suggested participants for this seminar are:

  • Architects
  • Builders
  • Contractors
  • Code officials
  • Project Managers

The American Institute of Architects has approved this course for 4.0 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEU) credits and SRRTC is applying for continuing education credits for the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), American Society Home Inspectors (ASHI) and other builders association. Certificates of participation will be provided with the number of credits approved.

Certification courses for the radon professional

At least once each year, Tennessee offers the course, Radon Measurement Operators Training, and Radon Technology for Mitigators to help those who are interested in becoming certified to conduct radon testing and perform mitigations.

The Radon Measurement Operators Training course covers topics such as:

  • Radon occurrence and health effects
  • Radon entry and behavior
  • Radon measurements
  • Radon/RDP measurement device protocols
  • Standard radon mitigation strategies
  • Radon resistant new construction

The suggested audience for this course includes:

  • Home inspectors
  • Appraisers
  • State and local health officials
  • Pest control specialists
  • Real estate professionals
  • Others interested in becoming a certified radon measurement specialist

The training center may apply for continuing education credits to NEHA and NRSB, ASHI, and others as requested.

The Radon Technology for Mitigators course offers a comprehensive four-day approach with two days of classroom lectures and demonstrations and two days of hands-on fieldwork. The training is offered by the Tennessee Radon Program for individuals to become certified in the radon proficiency programs. This certification listing provides homeowners with qualified mitigation specialists in Tennessee.

The suggested audience includes:

  • Others interested in becoming certified in radon mitigation

Participants must decide which certification program they would like to be listed with and contact that program for certification. You must attend the training, take and pass the exam before applying for certification.
