Skunk

  • Average adult size 36-42 inches in length.
  • Average size 1.7-2.6 ft. in length. Size of an ordinary house cat.
  • Average weight: males 6-14 lbs, females 4-10 lbs.
  • Litter size: 4-8 kittens per year.
  • Skunks are omnivorous and eats fruits, seeds, nuts, insects, worms, small rodent eggs and reptiles.
  • Black and white coloration and its unique ability to spray a smelly secretion has made the striped skunk well known.
  • Skunks prefer to live in timberland areas and pastures with good water sources.
  • They spend most of their days in dens and venture out at night to hunt.
  • In addition to the striped skunk, Tennessee is home to the spotted skunk.
  • Belong to the weasel family of carnivores.
  • Can emit a solid stream from 12 ft. away.
  • Legs are short and stocky and have long sharp front claws which make them exceptional diggers.
  • Dig for grubs in yards leaving behind small cone shaped holes.
  • February is the breeding season and are more active to being prone for road kill.
